FLOWTiLLA is the name for the Hamilton HipHop duo of Lee Reed and Mother Tareka. Part musical chemistry and part political affinity, the duo have become one of the freshest forces in the Kanadian Indie HipHop scene. Both repping the hard-lefty truth speak, both dedicated to using music as a signal-booster for protest and resistance movements & message.. the collaboration between Lee Reed and Mother Tareka came naturally and easy. Their writing walked the same ground. The spirit, theme and mission of their music was already allied. Their bodies of work were already complimentary. In a city with a small, tight-knit HipHop community, the formation of FLOWTiLLA was kinda meant to be.
Formed in 2012, the FLOWTiLLA moniker marked a partnership that extended well beyond the project namesake.. collaborating on each other’s solo projects, doing back-ups and guest spots, and making their respective artistic marks seen/heard all over each other’s work. Mother Tareka became a mainstay at Lee Reed performances, bringing some added funk to the set on the back-ups and guest verses. And Reed became a regular guest for Mother Tareka’s ‘live’ Afrobeat/ Soul/ HipHop outfit, The Rebel Funktion, bringing some big belly boom to the 9-piece monster. They work with the same DJ’s (Hamilton's !KrymeWon and Rac-One). They hold their practices and writing sessions jointly. They guest on each other’s records. They play on each other other’s tours. They have shared album release dates, mailouts, and promo campaigns. They have come to approach their music as a team, bringing the concepts of mutual aid to their work, and supporting, as if it was their own, each other’s artistic efforts and output. With just a handful of singles to date (2012’s “We Massive” / 2013’s “Stop Line 9” / and 2014’s “We Sing”), FLOWTiLLA have been slowly building their first full-length release. Meanwhile, the duo continues to support each other's efforts.. and to join forces under whatever banner they are flying that night, to make the message heard. |
RHYMETHiNK is a radical Hip-Hop music collective, working on the stolen lands of occupied Turtle Island. Founded in 2013 by anarchist rap artists TEST THEIR LOGIK and LEE REED, the RHYMETHiNK mission is to create and disseminate expressly revolutionary Hip-Hop: to soundtrack & support the frontline efforts of freedom fighters and social movements; to popularize anti-colonial, anti-capitalist, anti-fascist and anti-authoritarian politics in Hip-Hop; to wield words as weapons in the fight for social & environmental justice; and to fly a phat musical middle finger at all would-be masters, and the thugs & sycophants that serve them // [email protected] |
